House Cleaning Tips

It was a Tuesday afternoon, and I was in the middle of a frantic, deep move-out clean in my old apartment. I wanted that security deposit back desperately. In my impatience to scrub away years of soap scum in the shower, I poured a generous amount of liquid bleach down the drain, followed immediately by […]

I still remember the afternoon of my big move-out clean. The apartment was completely empty, the boxes were stacked by the door, and all that was left to do was run my trusty vacuum over the bedroom carpet to secure my security deposit. I plugged it in, hit the power switch, and within ten seconds, […]

I remember standing in my kitchen last Tuesday, the 4 PM sun streaming through the window, and I actually wanted to cry. I had just spent forty-five minutes on my hands and knees with what I thought was the best equipment. The floor was supposed to be a mirror. Instead, it looked like a skating […]

I stood in my kitchen last Tuesday, arms literally shaking from three hours of “elbow grease,” and looked at my island. It should have been a mirror. Instead, it looked like a dusty chalkboard that someone had tried to wipe with a greasy rag. I’d used the expensive sprays, the microfiber cloths, and even a […]

The sound of a wine glass hitting the floor is a very specific type of heartbreak, especially when that floor is covered in a plush, ivory-white rug. Just last Thanksgiving, I watched in slow motion as a full glass of bold Cabernet tipped over right in the center of my living room. My immediate instinct—the […]

I was on my hands and knees, sweat dripping onto the linoleum, trying to scrub three years of pet hair and dust off the baseboards of my tiny studio apartment. My lower back felt like it was being squeezed in a vice, and my knees were clicking with every miserable inch I moved. That was […]

I’ll never forget the Saturday I decided to tackle a deep clean of my kitchen. I was so proud of myself; I’d scrubbed the floors until they practically glowed, feeling like a domestic superhero. Then, I looked up. The top of the refrigerator was coated in a thick, sticky layer of grease and dust. I […]

I remember the first time I actually looked down into my window tracks after a long winter. It wasn’t just dust; it was a microscopic graveyard of flies, pollen, and what I’m pretty sure was petrified dog hair from three years ago. I tried to ignore it, but that “skritch-skritch” sound every time I wanted […]

I was standing in my bathroom, sweating, clutching a crumpled roll of paper towels like they were a life raft. The afternoon sun was streaming in, and instead of a gleaming reflection, I saw a map of hazy swirls and blue-tinted lint. I’d sprayed, wiped, and polished three times already. Every time I thought I […]
